  • Design Council
    Web site offers case studies and educational resources relating to the use of design in all areas of industry. By registering you can tailor the site to show the information you want.
  • Community Media Association
    Web site is a good source of information on community media initiatives nationally and will be particularly interesting for anyone wanting to work with community arts groups.
  • D&AD
    is the Web site of British Design and Art Direction, an educational charity working on behalf of the design and advertising communities. The site provides information on a variety of creative disciplines and educational programmes including details of the prestigious D&AD awards.
  • Skillset
    is the Web site of the National Training Organisation for Broadcast, Film, Video and Interactive Media. It is a great source of information on careers, courses and funding.

  • Encyclopaedia Britannica
    is a useful tool, allowing you to find basic information on many topics without subscription. You will need to subscribe to get the premium service with full text articles without advertisements.
  • Art & Architecture Thesaurus Browser
    was produced for research purposes by the J Paul Getty Trust and is an excellent source for quick explanation of art and architecture terms. Consult the online help to get the most out of the service.
  • Xrefer
    is a free site allowing you to search a database of over 50 reference books. These books include dictionaries of art, music, psychology, science, and sociology; books of quotations; a twentieth century Who's Who, an encyclopaedia of places, and more. The search interface is simple, but the cross-references and entries adjacent to results are what make this a great resource.
  • World Wide Arts Resource
    is a vast searchable directory of online arts information with over 150,000 pages - a site you can get lost in for hours! It has over 35,000 works of art submitted by artists and valuable links to museums, festivals and online resources.

Image Collections

  • Axis
    is a national information resource on contemporary visual artists in Britain. From the site, you can access a database of over 3,500 artists and 15,000 digitised works of art. You can search the database by artist name, type of work, material, or region.
  • Public Art Research Archive
    based at Sheffield Hallam University has comprehensive records of permanently sited public art in Britain and links to individual artists pages. A good place to find out more about that strange object in your high street!
  • Visual Arts Data Service
    is based at the Surrey Institute of Art & Design. It provides access to visual arts digital resources for users in UK further and higher education. It has a large database of images that you can search by keyword and collection name.

Museums and Galleries

  • Design Museum
    This site offers lots of information on forthcoming exhibitions at the museum. It has a growing archive of articles based around past exhibitors and some useful resources in the Education section. Check out the section on the Digital Design Museum, the museum's showcase of the latest developments in Web design. You will need Acrobat Reader and Flash to get the most from the site, but you can view a reduced version in HTML.
  • National Museum of Photography, Film and Television
    This Web site has all the information you need about current and future events and the services the gallery (based in Bradford) offers to education. Have a look at the section on Insight: The Collections and Research Centre for some great educational resources.
  • Tate Galleries
    Another great Web site! Here you can search the Tate Collection's database of 25,000 works, find out details of current and future exhibitions, and access visitor information.
  • MoMA
    This good looking Web site from the Museum of Modern Art in New York has information on the gallery's extensive collections and images of a number of key works in categories ranging from Film to Sculpture and Painting.
