 Networking and Discussion

  • PedagoNet is a Web site for exchanging learning resources. It has its own chat room for the purpose of discussing the site in particular, and learning resources in general.

 Learning and Teaching Materials

  • EWIT - The Educators' Website for Information Technology is a learning community of academic and technical educators and community-based and business partnerships. EWIT supports the innovative use of IT skills and academic standards to enhance learning and to develop IT skills for work.
  • Chance is a course on "numerical literacy" hosted by and taught at Dartmouth College in the USA. It focuses on probability and statistics and how mathematical skills and understanding can be used to interpret information encountered in everyday life, such as lottery results and winning streaks in sport. The Chance Web site includes notes for lecturers on how to teach topics such as "Coincidences" and "Clinical Trials, Experiments and Observational Studies", examples of student projects and a newsletter with updates on the course and new ideas to use as a basis for teaching the fundamental principles of probability.
  • ProbabilityNet is a resource for teaching probability at a more advanced level. It is designed for lecturers to use as a source of ideas and also for students to learn at their own pace. Tutorials are organised around a series of theorems which students are invited to solve (solutions are also provided). ProbabilityNet gives historical background information on the development of each theorem, and thus offers the student the chance to learn about the mathematicians and philosophers who have contributed to the field. An email discussion forum is used to support people using the site or who have general queries about probability problems.

Blackboard provides tools that may be used to build courses, and is a good repository of online materials that may be browsed for ideas.
The Learning and Teaching Support Network (LTSN) Web site points to all the subject centres and the many resources they offer for lecturers and teachers.
